May Clutter-Busting Challenge: Day 1

Happy May!  I have a feeling May is going to be a good month.  Power of positive thinking, right?

To get me going on the right track, I’m joining Crystal of Money Saving Mom in her May challenge: Clutter-Busting Challenge: Get Rid of Seven Things Every Single Day in May!

*Note: I am a big fan of Crystal, her plan and goals for debt-free living, helpful tools, and  her nonjudgmental, encouraging personality.  She shares her experiences & advice with such grace and understanding.  In addition, her challenges are simple yet beneficial to myself, my family, and my home.

Wanna join me?  Here’s what you do…

Each day in May you go through your house and find 7 things you can toss, donate, recycle, sell, or find someone else who can use them.  That’s it.  But such a simple challenge can reap huge rewards.  I bet many of us will find more than 7 items some days.

I’m having my husband and little girl join me in the challenge.  They may not take part each day, but they can certainly help many days of the month.  Among other things, it’s a great way to spark continual conversation with my 4-year old about helping those less fortunate than us, recycling, cutting back on waste, being grateful for our many blessings, and keeping our home clutter-free and peaceful.

Each day I’ll share a picture of the 7 items we are booting out of our home.  If you have a blog and would like to share a link to your 7+ items as well, please feel free to do so in the comments.  If you don’t have a blog, please still share in the comments about your progress!  Encouraging one another is a big aspect of this challenge!

I was eager to begin–I ♥ decluttering!  Here are the things I’m purging today:

We didn’t spend more than a few minutes on collecting items today because we were pushing dinner hour.  So Munchie and I each claimed a spot (I took the kitchen and she took a toy basket) and we took less than five minutes to find our items.  We trashed a few items before I took this picture so our item total was 16 or 17.  Woohoo!  Imagine what we could do in 15 minutes?  Or 30?

Alrighty…your turn!  Do come back and let me know if you find any items to get rid of today.  🙂

  1. Cherie says:

great post. I’m onboard. will send as I go..hummso much to throw..

  2. Great idea!
I could find a lot of stuff at the beginning of the month, but I am curious about how difficult it is going to get around, say, May 25! Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
(I’ve already been purging — I have 2 big boxes in the hallway full of clothes.) 🙂

    • Yes, I am curious, too. Except I have a garage full of stuff I could always go to…bleeeeh. And since it’s a minimum 7 things a day and they can be things you toss in the trash, that makes it a bit easier for me. For example, I could go through my office every few days and find 7 things for sure. They don’t have to be “big” items…I tossed little fake gold coins yesterday. ha! 🙂

      • You know, in a month or so you’re going to wish you’d kept those gold coins. Some amazing use for them is going to across your path and you’ll kick yourself! LOL At least, that’s what happens to me. 😉

        • Don’t I know it! I thought of St.Pat’s Day…the leprechaun could’ve left them, but then Munchie expects chocolate coins from any late-night visitors. I bet I will regret it. SIGH. 🙂

  3. Great idea! I really need to do some decluttering!

  4. Good idea, I’m going to try it!

  5. I need to declutter just a bit in preparation for baby. 7 things is a doable task, I like that! 🙂

  6. I actually end up decluttering every May because our neighborhood usually has garage sales the Friday of Memorial day weekend. It’s nice because people in town tend to know to come our neighborhood that Friday so we don’t need to do a lot of advertising or signs. So I usually go through my whole house throughout the month and gather up stuff to sell. Whatever doesn’t sell usually then goes to a local mission to sell in their store. So while I’m not disciplined enough right now to do a daily thing – I certainly end up with at least that much by the end of the month! 🙂

    • That’s awesome! I have accumulated a lot of “things” these past few years (how did that happen?) and even though I declutter routinely, it seems I can always benefit from doing it every few weeks. Maybe that means I’m not doing an “honest” job….sigh. 🙂

  7. Large box of extra hand creams lotion hair products etc. My bathroom cupboards are clearer:-)
