Recipe: Slow Cooker Applesauce

A few weeks ago I made my first batch of slow cooker applesauce.  Yum.

Scented candles?  Mais non.  Just get some applesauce cooking and you’re all good.  To top it off, you can freeze it.  Word to your mom.

Next time I’ll make a large batch.  Then my sampling won’t be so obvious.

Wanna know my simple & tasty recipe?  Here, I’ll show ya.

Grab a variety of apples.  I used a mix of gala, fuji, granny smith, & honey crisp.

Peel, core, and slice them up.  Toss them into the slow cooker.  I added a cinnamon stick, cinnamon, lemon rind, fresh lemon juice, and brown sugar.  I let it cook on low for 6 hours (I cooked it longer, but that was unnecessary for this small batch).  A few hours into cooking, I mixed it up a bit.

A bonus:  using the slow cooker in the summer.  No standing over a hot stove or waiting around for it to cook.  Get out and play and come back to it later!

My Slow Cooker Applesauce

  • 8 apples (a variety works well)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2-3 Tbsps fresh lemon juice (I used Meyer)
  • 2 large lemon rind shavings
  • 3 Tbsps brown sugar
  • 1-2 tsps cinnamon (based on how cinnamon-infused you’d like it)

Wash, peel, core, & slice apples.  Put them in the slow cooker.  Add remaining ingredients to the apples.  Cook on low for 5-6 hours.  After 3 hours, I mixed it up then let it finish up.  Enjoy!

  1. Slow cookers are great, aren’t they?

  2. I did that last year and then canned it. SO easy and fun! I can’t wait to do it again this year! 🙂

    • Yes! I loved that all I had to do was stick them in freezer jars and done. No added steps. Next time maybe I’ll go pick my own apples at an orchard. That’d be a great fall activity.:)

      • Yes it really would be! We tried to do that last year but the apple crop last year wasn’t that great so by the time we got there they had shut it down for the day. It had only been open for 2 hours! Hopefully this years crop will be better. It would be so fun to do with kids. Add that to your 102 things to do in the fall with kids list! 🙂

  3. What a great idea, making applesauce in a slow cooker. It looks delicious!

Mmmm – I love making fresh applesauce – Soooo much better than the store bought variety! Your applesauce looks De-Lish! Thanks for stopping by my blog to check out my Lemon Marmalade. Have a wonderful week 🙂

  5. how long will this last in the freezer?

    thank you

  6. I have a question: what happens to the cinnamon stick and lemon rind? Do they dissolve into the mix or do you take them out at the end? (Sorry – I’ve never cooked with either of them). Thanks!

    • Hi Carol! I should’ve added that I removed the cinnamon stick after it cooked and some of my rind dissolved right into it all while I remove any other pieces that don’t. 🙂 Hope that helps!
