I scream, you scream, we all scream for…pistachios!

Every winter you can find bowls filled with pistachio nuts around my parents’ home.  Growing up, I munched on those bad boys like there was no tomorrow.  After I left for college, coming home for the holidays meant a reunion with my mama’s home cooking (best cook ever), giant puzzles with dad, holiday tv movies…and those pretty little bowls filled with delectable, irresistible pistachios.  Yes, I think that highly of pistachios.

Luckily, I can carry on this tradition with my family since both my husband and 3 year-old love them, too.  I don’t use the pretty bowls like my mom does (but I have aspirations to mimic her dainty touch eventually) and this year I didn’t buy them until today!  Sacrilege.  I don’t know why I waited to so long, but as long as we’re munchin’ and crunchin’ on them from here through January it’s all good.

It’s one of our simple holiday traditions.  Nothing fancy, nothing sophisticated.  But it suits our family just fine and as I cuddle up on the couch with my little one and crack open the shells for her, I hope she will keep the pistachio-cuddle-up tradition alive with her family one day.

What is your favorite simple holiday tradition?  I’d love to hear about it!

  1. My family has a similar tradition where we use a nut cracker to open and eat the big bags of nut mixes- and we all secretly pretend not to prefer the almonds and walnuts, as to prevent a run on them. At the end, it’s a bowl full of brazil nuts… Happy early New Year brazil nuts. You’ve survived another year.
